Here’s one of the reasons I don’t buy the cynical interpretation that Ariel gives up her identity for a man.

This screencap comes from her introductory scene. She’s searching through a shipwreck for human artifacts–which is her passion–when suddenly she’s attacked by a shark.

While fleeing, she accidentally drops her bag full of artifacts right in the shark’s path. Without hesitating, she chooses her passion over her safety, risking her life for a dinglehopper.

The girl is an anthropologist who studies humans. That’s her passion, that’s how she spends her time…that’s her identity.

Sure, Eric is the catalyst that leads Ariel to changing her species and leaving her family–he certainly intensifies her feelings–but they’re feelings she already has, and they dictate most of her life.

If Ariel had the chance to become a human before she met Eric, everything that we know about her suggests that she probably would.

Ariel is an anthropologist, I stand by this

Triton: Fuck your passion!
Ariel: okay

The Horrible Things People Say To Tarantula Owners

Reblogged from tarantulacuties

:(

When I was 9 years old… I had a rose hair tarantula. One night my family and I came home to find that our appointment had been broken into.. they stole several things, but the most horrifying thing to me was the discovery that the monster that had broken into our appointment had gone out of their way just to torture my precious pet, flip him on his back and stabbed him with a fork… I cried for days over that… and even though I love tarantulas and spiders, I have not been able to bring myself to get a other one… it was just so heartbreaking for me… but no one understood that…. if it had been someone’s dog it would have been all over the news… because he was a tarantula no one cared. :-(

^^^ This is one of the saddest, most infuriating things I’ve ever read regarding animal abuse. I am so sorry you experienced that and I’m sorry for your pet :( that person was truly a monster and it’s a shame no one ever taught that person empathy or respect for other living things. Shit like this just makes me more passionate about running this blog and @alrightyspidey. People NEED to see that these creatures are more than what they’ve been taught. These creatures and other misunderstood ones like them deserve respect just as much as mainstream pets.

Ok, look. I’m a sucker for clickbait. I really truly am. So I’m scrolling through an OK Celeb article on celebrities with unattractive significant others when I see this on the side of my screen:

image

Is this…. real?

Those are our boys. And their families. And they’re the face for an open dialogue about mental health issues that come in all shapes in sizes. And it’s trending. This is like… a teaching moment. Holy shit. This. This right here.

I was skeptical seeing the headline. Hm, maybe they are making fun of people with mental health issues? Maybe they say problematic things about the disorders they cover? So I clicked on the article. Here’s the hook:

image

Statistics. Empathy. Variety. And no judgement. This article offers information and role models for people struggling with lots of different things. Maybe this is just me projecting, but this seems like a huge step for mainstream media.

I’m not saying that Jared Padalecki brought mental health to the forefront single handedly, but just look at this:

image
image

The article mentioned the AKF campaigns. It mentioned the charities that work to help people like me and Jared daily. It gives a name to Jared’s illness (and the other celebrities’ too) and describes what the transition to help looks like.

Now y’all know that I am not the biggest Jared Padalecki fan out there and have criticized the efficacy of his campaigns in the past, but look at this impact. I feel so blessed to have this right now.

Representation MATTERS. You could not find a single article like this even 5 years ago on the Internet. But because of this kind of social activism, mental illness is being talked about, it’s being de-stigmatized. Someone that this community looks up to is literally leading the charge.

I am so proud of Jared and that work that he’s done - not just to help himself, but to help others, too.

(I’m gonna go cry for a bit now ok goodbye)

Three cheers for these guys [x]

This is how to be a good ally.

Using their Bro-ness for good, not evil

So a tiny story: on Black Friday a few weeks ago I went to Gamestop to buy my brother a game for Christmas, and I noticed this older man was watching me like a hawk. He was loitering around the front of the store without really buying anything, and every time I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye he was looking at me. I went to look at the PS4 games, and he was looking at something right behind me. I checked out the Nintendo games, and he was looking at them too. I was the only woman in the store, by the way.

By the time I got in line to pay he was loitering at the front of the store again, and I just had that feeling that he was going to try and take the game I just bought, or steal my purse, as soon as I left the store. OR, he was going to try and follow me home. And I know I don’t have to explain that terror to any woman reading this, but all I could think was that I’m in this Gamestop alone with at least twenty other men and something is about to happen. I’m beginning to freak out, to the point where I’ve just pulled my pepper spray out of my purse and into the pocket of my coat.

So there I am, next in line to pay, and there is this GIGANTIC dudebro right behind me, and I say gigantic as a 6 foot tall woman. He says, “Ma’am? Don’t be offended, but would it be alright if I walked you to your car?” and I was like “Are you serious?” and he was like “There are some weird guys in here right now. Have you noticed that guy watching you?” and then I showed the dudebro the pepper spray in my pocket and he was like “Right on. Would you still let me walk you to your car?” and I said yes.

So I paid, and waited while HE paid, and he walked me to my car. And just as I was getting in, the weird guy who’d been loitering came out of the store, saw me and my dudebro, and turned around and walked away in the opposite direction.

In short: men who recognize that women are unsafe in dark alleys, college campuses, grocery stores, gas stations and retail stores and do something about it are the kind of quality men that this world needs more of.

A new species of spider has been named after the Hogwarts sorting hat in J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, thanks to its peculiar shape. Researchers in Mumbai formally dubbed the insect Eriovixia Gryffindori in the Indian Journal of Arachnology. The spider earned the magical title thanks to its pronounced “sub-triangular abdomen”, which resembles the shape and colours of the Hogwarts sorting hat. (Source)
